If the "Table of Contents" app block or app embed does not appear in the theme editor, check the template you have open and your plan. You can add the "Table of Contents" app block to a blog post template on every plan. Product, page, and collection blocks are available only on the Regular Plan. On a vintage theme, use an app embed.
Template: Check whether you have a blog post, product, page, or collection template open. The home page, blog listing, and search results are not supported for displaying a table of contents.
Plan: If you have a product, page, or collection template open, check that you are on the Regular Plan.
Theme type: Use an app block on an Online Store 2.0 theme, or an app embed on a vintage theme.
Recent changes: Check whether you have just reinstalled the app. After reinstalling, app embeds are off again.
Cause: The table of contents supports the following four template types. The home page, blog listing, and search results are not supported.

What to do: Select the target theme in "Add the app to a theme" on the home screen, then select "Add app block" for the template where you want to display a table of contents. The rows are labeled "Blog posts," "Products (Available on Regular Plan)," "Pages (Available on Regular Plan)," and "Collections (Available on Regular Plan)."

Cause: Product, page, and collection app blocks and app embeds are available only on the Regular Plan. They do not appear in the theme editor picker unless you are on that plan.
What to do: Switch to the Regular Plan, then reopen the theme editor for the target template. See Plan Differences for plan details.
Cause: On an Online Store 2.0 theme, add the "Table of Contents" app block to the template. On a vintage theme, open "App embeds" in the theme editor and turn on an embed such as "Article (Vintage theme)." The picker you need differs by theme type.
When you select an Online Store 2.0 theme on the home screen, a message identifies it as an Online Store 2.0 theme. For a vintage theme, the message identifies it as a theme released before Online Store 2.0.
What to do: Use the option that matches your theme type.
On an Online Store 2.0 theme, add "Table of Contents" from "Add block" or "Add section" in the theme editor, then select "Save."
On a vintage theme, open "App embeds," turn on the target app embed, then select "Save." For blog posts, use "Article (Vintage theme)."

If a message in a blue box appears above the table of contents in the theme editor preview, the app block or app embed has been added. This message appears only in the theme editor.
Cause: Uninstalling the app deletes table of contents settings data. After reinstalling, app embeds are off again. On a vintage theme, a table of contents does not appear while its app embed is off.
Note: Contact us before reinstalling. Settings data cannot be restored.
What to do: On a vintage theme, turn the app embed on again and select "Save." On an Online Store 2.0 theme, also check that the target template contains the "Table of Contents" app block.
You are done when "Table of Contents" or the target app embed appears in the theme editor and you can save it. If a table of contents still does not appear on the storefront, see Table of Contents Not Displaying.
